Transforming Coffee  farming in Kabazi: Introducing Ruiru grafted Coffee

For generations, Kabazi farmers have nurtured coffee trees, their livelihoods have been sustained by coffee for over 50 years. However, time has brought challenges. Traditional SL 28 and Batian varieties have yielded diminishing returns, averaging at 3kg per tree. Demotivated by these low yields, many farmers have turned to alternative crops to earn a living. The farmers have lacked the will to expand their coffee farms.

Determined to make coffee a high-income crop again , 3E Organization in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture Kabazi ward, is introducing a revolutionary solution: Ruiru grafted coffee. This innovative variety promises a brighter future, boasting superior disease resistance and the potential for significantly higher yields, targeting a remarkable 7kg per tree. This shift marks a new dawn for Kabazi’s coffee, offering a chance to not only revive production but also improve the lives of farmers who depend on it.

3E’s commitment extends far beyond simply providing new seedlings. They recognize that knowledge is power, and are equipping farmers with the tools they need to thrive. Training programs on sustainable agricultural practices ensure that Kabazi’s coffee farms flourish for years to come. Farmers are not only learning how to cultivate healthy and productive coffee, but also how to manage their resources effectively through financial literacy and agripreneurship workshops. This holistic approach empowers them to make sound financial decisions, ensuring the long-term viability of their coffee farming.

The farmers, who did not know existence of grafted Ruiru coffee have welcomed it with great positivity. As more farmers embrace these advancements, Kabazi’s coffee farming will not only be revitalized but also transformed into a model of sustainability and prosperity.
