Baringo County’s semi-arid lands have long told a story of drought, uncertainty, and struggle. Today, they tell a different one of kitchen gardens bursting with produce, families eating well, and farmers who refused to let dry ground define their futures. This is the story of what happens when a community is equipped, trusted, and given the tools to transform the land beneath their feet.

On 17th June 2026, 3E Africa’s two-year Mizizi Yetu Maisha Yetu (Our Roots, Our Lives) project reached a landmark in Baringo County, coinciding with the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, a globally significant moment in the fight against climate-driven land degradation. Beneficiaries, community members, the County Government of Baringo, and the 3E Africa team gathered not only to celebrate 2 years of work, but to stand collectively against the growing threat of desertification.

The event was honoured by the presence of the CEC for Water, Irrigation, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Arch. Reuben Rutto, whose remarks set a powerful tone for the day. Echoing the spirit of the project, the CEC called on communities to advance conservation efforts, plant more trees, and commit to restoring Baringo’s degraded lands. The message that resonated deeply with beneficiaries who have lived that reality and are now part of the solution.

Grounded in 3E Africa’s three core pillars of Environment, Entrepreneurship, and Energy, the project journeyed from the survey of semi-arid landscapes to the transformation of those same lands into productive kitchen gardens, fruit orchards, forest tree plots, and cereal farms. What began as possibility became proof.

The closing event was alive with culture, joy, and testimony. Farmer Mary shared how she moved from farming a dry, unproductive plot to cultivating a thriving sweet potato garden, saving enough along the way to purchase goats. Stories like hers remind us that food security and economic empowerment are inseparable, and that with the right support, even the driest ground can yield abundance.

To cement sustainability beyond the project’s close, each participating farmer received a water harvesting tank and a grain silo. This support ensures harvests are preserved and families remain nourished long after the programme ends.

Monicah Changwony knows what it means to plant seeds in uncertain ground. A farmer and mother in Marigat, she spent years contending with harsh arid conditions, unpredictable rainfall, and limited access to practical resources. Like many households in Baringo, where the climate dictates the rhythm of daily life, feeding her family with fresh vegetables was not just a challenge, it often felt out of reach.

That began to change when Monicah joined 3E Africa’s Mizizi Yetu Maisha Yetu project, an initiative grounded in our three core pillars of Environment, Entrepreneurship, and Energy. Taking a hands-on approach rooted in community ownership, the project trained women in sustainable kitchen gardening, covering water-efficient irrigation, soil health using locally available materials, and nutrition-focused growing practices.

Today, the spaces around her home that were once barren have been transformed into vibrant patches of leafy greens, tomatoes, and other vegetables. Her family now has regular access to fresh, nutritious food, a steady, meaningful shift from where they started. Beyond her household, Monicah has become a resource for her neighbours, sharing what she has learned and stepping into the role of a local champion for sustainable agriculture.

Her story reflects the wider change 3E Africa is supporting across Baringo, where climate pressures continue to strain livelihoods and household food security. Through community-centred programmes that prioritise practical knowledge, peer support, and local ownership, we are equipping women with the tools to work with their environment rather than against it.

Rose Tiren knows what it means to work hard for uncertain results. A farmer from Kiserian, she spent years tending her small plot with limited resources, unpredictable rainfall, and little access to practical agricultural knowledge. Like many smallholder farmers in Baringo, a region where arid conditions and erratic seasons make farming a gamble, each harvest brought as much uncertainty.

That began to change when Rose joined 3E Africa’s Mizizi Yetu Maisha Yetu project in Baringo. The initiative, grounded in 3E’s three core pillars of Environment, Entrepreneurship, and Energy, took a hands-on approach, training farmers in climate-smart agroecological practices, building soil health, improving water conservation, and strengthening their household income and nutrition for a reliable livelihood.

Rose did not just attend the training session, she applied what she learned. Over time, her farm began to reflect that effort. Today, she harvests pawpaws, a crop once far beyond what her soil and knowledge could sustain and sells them at market, generating a consistent income for her family. Her land, once a source of stress, has become a source of stability.

Her story is part of a wider pattern of change 3E Africa is supporting across Baringo, where climate pressures continue to undermine livelihoods and food security. Through community-centred programmes that prioritise practical knowledge and local ownership, 3E is equipping farmers with the tools to work with their environment rather than against it.

But there are many more farmers like Rose who are still waiting for this opportunity. Let us work together in strengthening our rural community especially in Arid and Semi-Arid lands.

Working with our community projects across Kenya, we know how tough it can be to involve everyone in our activities. We sometimes face limitations, lack of adequate resources, selection criteria that restrict who can join, or personal challenges faced by the individuals. Despite these challenges, we at 3E Africa always strive to ensure all groups are included, women, men, youth, and people living with a disability. We believe that Without inclusivity, our impact in the communities we work with will not be fully realized.

In our past work, we’ve always brought on board people living with a disability to participate and reap the benefits of our projects. Our current project, Mizizi yetu Maisha yetu, is no different. We met the Sigma Youth Group during mapping in Koriema. Their enthusiasm to support each other immediately led us to include them. We selected two of their participants who had access to water to take part in the project. Clare Bungei, a young woman living with a disability was one of the selected beneficiaries. She shared a painful reality, the greatest challenge PWDs face is exclusion. They are often ignored because communities or individuals perceive them as lacking the capacity to lead successful projects. For us, this was not a barrier, it was an opportunity to shatter a misconception.

Through Clare’s successful involvement, the entire community has learned that disability is not inability. With the right tools and simple solutions, people living with a disability can join community efforts, improve their own lives and their communities. Clare is now a beacon of hope, empowering herself, her family, and changing the deep-seated attitudes of the community on disability.

Our experience in the community has cemented a critical lesson, we must have representation of every member of the community, youth, women, men, and People Living with Disabilities to achieve successful initiatives. By involving PWDs, we not only deliver tangible project benefits but also actively change the attitudes of the wider community. This dual impact is the very definition of sustainable development.

Our commitment remains to work directly and indirectly with all community members to bring about lasting, sustainable change together.

In the drought-ridden lands of Marigat sub-county, Baringo South, where rainfall is minimal and agricultural options are limited, access to nutritious food has been a persistent challenge. For generations, communities have largely relied on purchasing foods, especially outside the brief rainy season, leading to low nutrition and significant financial strain. Recognizing this critical need, the 3E organization, through its “Mizizi yetu, Maisha yetu” project, has brought a transformative approach, demonstrating how placing the community at the heart of the solution, together with appropriate technology, can cultivate lasting change.

The project’s foundation rests on empowering women through knowledge transfer. The initial step was about fostering understanding. Women were engaged in discussions about the benefits of cultivating their own fruits and vegetables, the cost savings, the control over the quality and safety of food for their families, and the link between diverse home-grown produce and improved household nutrition. This focus on building awareness and ownership from within was paramount, ensuring that subsequent interventions would resonate deeply with their immediate needs and challenges.

A significant hurdle in Marigat is its rocky terrain, a major barrier to proper farming. This is where innovative gardening technologies became a game-changer. The project introduced moist gardens and corn garden solutions that bypass the soil limitations by requiring only a proper mixture of good soil and manure. These technologies, while modern, were presented as accessible tools that could be adapted to their environment. They technologies could occupy different varieties of vegetables, ensuring a consistent supply of nutritious vegetables. The project also integrated mango and paw paw fruit seedlings into these kitchen gardens adding to the nutrition of the household once they are ready for harvest.

The success of “Mizizi yetu, Maisha yetu” project lies in its commitment to a community-centered model. This wasn’t a top-down intervention; it was a collaborative journey. From the initial needs’ assessment to the selection of technologies and the ongoing maintenance, the women were active participants. They embraced every step, understanding that their engagement was the bedrock of a long-term solution. This shared ownership created a sense of responsibility, fostering a sustainable model where knowledge is shared and solutions are collectively maintained.

The results have been good and impactful. With consistent follow-up and technical support. By May, many women were already enjoying the cheerful harvests from their kitchen gardens. The fresh, organic vegetables are now sourced directly from their backyards, eliminating the need for purchases. Witnessing these small plots of land, powered by modern gardening technologies and nurtured by empowered hands, feeding entire households is a powerful indicator of the project’s success.

3E organization is committed to creating sustainable and innovative solutions for rural communities. We shall continue to demonstrate that when communities are empowered to drive their own solutions, supported by appropriate innovation we create resilience and self-sufficiency within the communities.

Kenya’s rural communities are the backbone of its economy, with agriculture driving GDP and employing a large portion of the population. Historically, they have been the primary source of food for urban areas and a key contributor to exports, solidifying the rural sector as Kenya’s agricultural hub.3E Organization places these communities at the heart of its work. Our deep engagement has fostered a profound understanding of their importance in securing national livelihoods, driving our conviction that thriving rural areas are essential for urban prosperity.

In Marigat, an arid and semi-arid region, our focus has been on empowering rural women. Recognizing their desire to provide nutritious diets amidst water scarcity and limited knowledge on health and nutrition, we have successfully implemented initiatives that enable them to cultivate their own fruits and vegetables. This has not only improved household nutrition but also generated income through the sale of surplus produce, demonstrating the power of localized solutions.

Addressing the challenge of declining coffee production in Subukia, Nakuru County, a key area for both food and cash crops, 3E Organization has implemented comprehensive training programs for rural farmers. By focusing on improved coffee production and management techniques and introducing more productive and disease-resistant varieties, we aim to reverse the discouraging trend of low yields and ensure a more prosperous future for coffee farmers.

In the productive region of Molo Subcounty, our interventions have targeted the dual challenges of degraded soils from chemical-intensive agriculture and the struggles of dairy farmers with low milk production and feeding. Through training on fodder diversification and enhanced dairy production and management, we have witnessed a significant transformation, with increased milk yields and reduced feeding burdens paving the way for dairy farming to become a significant income-generating activity.

Our work within these diverse rural communities underscores the transformative power of targeted, sustainable farming initiatives. At 3E Organization, we are driven by the understanding that each action taken directly empowers and uplifts these communities, securing their livelihoods while simultaneously safeguarding our precious environment.

The recently concluded second Eastern Africa Agroecology Conference was an experience of inspiration, innovation, and collaborative spirit. We at 3E Africa were privileged to be part of this important event, where agroecology experts and practitioners converged to discuss the future of sustainable agriculture.

The conference served as a crucial platform for exploring policy pathways that support agroecology. Speakers emphasized the need for government frameworks that prioritize ecological farming, incentivize sustainable land management, and promote equitable market access for smallholder farmers. Discussions centred on the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with scientific innovation, creating a holistic approach to agricultural development.

On the innovation front, the conference showcased a range of exciting developments. From cutting-edge soil health management techniques to the integration of digital technologies for optimized resource use since agroecology is proving to be a dynamic and evolving field. We witnessed inspiring stories of farmers utilizing integrated pest management, diversified cropping systems, and regenerative practices to enhance productivity and resilience.

One of the most enriching aspects of the conference was the opportunity to learn from organizations leading the charge in agroecology. We heard success stories from initiatives focused on community-based seed banks, agroforestry systems, and farmer-to-farmer knowledge exchange. These experiences underscored the importance of collaboration, local empowerment, and a holistic approach that considers the interconnectedness of ecological, social, and economic factors.

A resounding message echoed throughout the conference was the crucial role of women and youth in driving the agroecological transition. Women, as primary food producers in many regions, possess invaluable knowledge and experience in sustainable farming practices. Youth, with their energy and innovative spirit, are essential for embracing new technologies and ensuring the long-term viability of agroecological systems. At 3E Africa, we recognize the immense potential of women and youth in our mission. Their inclusion is not just a matter of equity, but a crucial part of rural development initiatives.

The Agroecology Conference resonated deeply with 3E Africa’s core values and programs. Our integrated approach, which combines environmental restoration, economic empowerment, and renewable energy solutions, aligns perfectly with the holistic principles of agroecology. The conference reinforced the importance of our work in restoring degraded lands, empowering farmers with sustainable practices, and promoting climate-smart agriculture. We were inspired to see how our work directly ties into the broader agroecology movement.

The Agroecology Conference served as a powerful reminder that the transition to sustainable agriculture is not just possible, but essential for the health of our planet and the well-being of future generations. We invite you to join us in this movement. Together, we can cultivate a sustainable future, where healthy ecosystems and thriving communities coexist in harmony.

Rural communities, the heart of many nations, are vital sources of food, resources, and cultural heritage. Yet, they often face significant challenges: poverty, limited education access, and inadequate infrastructure. Recognizing this, 3E Organization has discovered that women inclusion is important to bridge these gaps. Empowering women is not just about gender equality, it’s the cornerstone of thriving communities.

Our work in Nakuru and Baringo counties has demonstrated this. Women are the backbone of rural agriculture, the primary farmers responsible for planting and harvesting. To exclude them from agricultural initiatives is to undermine food security itself. Moreover, women are the at the center of family well-being, ensuring health, nutrition, and education. Investing in them creates a ripple effect, positively impacting generations to come. When women have access to resources and opportunities, they invest in their families, driving a cycle of positive change.

Beyond agriculture, women are dynamic entrepreneurs, fueling local economies with small businesses. Supporting their entrepreneurial spirit diversifies rural economies, creates jobs, and combats poverty. By providing financial literacy trainings, market access, and agripreneurship training, we empower them to become economic drivers and amplify their voices within their communities.

In marginalized settings, women are powerful agents of social change. They are at the forefront of community-based initiatives, ensuring that development efforts are responsive to the needs and priorities of the entire community. Their participation fosters inclusivity and balanced progress, vital for sustainable development.

3E Organization understands this critical role. We actively integrate women’s participation across our core pillars: Environment, Entrepreneurship, and Energy.

Environment: We empower women as champions of environmental conservation through training in sustainable farming practices, climate change mitigation, and leadership. We believe they are the catalysts for change, driving sustainable practices in their local environments.

Entrepreneurship: We support women’s economic empowerment by providing financial literacy and training to transform daily activities into income-generating ventures. This includes poultry, dairy, fruit, and vegetable farming. By enabling women to earn income, we empower them to contribute to their community’s economic growth.

Energy: Recognizing the burdens women face with traditional cooking methods – gathering firewood and burning charcoal. We promote renewable energy sources. We’ve begun providing biogas kits to alleviate this burden and improve household efficiency. We are committed to expanding this support as resources allow, reducing environmental impact and improving women’s lives.

The involvement of women is not merely a matter of gender equality; it’s a fundamental requirement for achieving sustainable rural development. By empowering women with knowledge, skills, and resources, we unlock their potential to transform their communities, build resilient economies, and create a sustainable future for all. We are dedicated to ensuring our efforts translate into tangible, lasting change. We are also committed to building partnerships that amplify our impact and addressing the systemic barriers that women face, ensuring that our initiatives are not only effective but also equitable and sustainable for generations to come.

For generations, rural communities have relied heavily on non-renewable energy sources like firewood for their basic needs – cooking, lighting, and heating. This dependence not only strains our forests but also contributes significantly to climate change. Recognizing this urgent need for sustainable solutions, the 3E organization is championing the adoption of clean energy sources, particularly biogas, in rural areas.

Imagine the daily struggle of women and girls in rural areas, burdened by the heavy task of collecting firewood. The constant pressure on our forests due to rising populations exacerbates this issue. This not only impacts the environment but also limits the time and energy women have for other essential activities and income-generating opportunities.

In line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy for All, our organization is actively working to empower rural communities with access to clean energy alternatives. By promoting biogas digesters among dairy farmers, we’re not only addressing the pressing issue of animal waste management but also providing them with a renewable energy source and a valuable organic fertilizer.

The impact of these biogas kits has been truly remarkable. Farmers have reported a significant reduction in firewood consumption by up to 75%, leading to a substantial decrease in deforestation. This not only protects our environment but also brings about a range of positive changes within the community. Reduced reliance on firewood translates to less indoor air pollution and a significant decrease in the risk of respiratory illnesses, particularly among women and children, the use of bio-slurry as fertilizer improves crop yields, boosting farmers’ incomes,Faster cooking times and reduced time spent collecting firewood free up valuable time for other income-generating activities or leisure. Additionally, biogas has led Proper waste management practices contribute to better overall hygiene and sanitation within the community.

However, the journey towards a truly energy-resilient rural landscape requires a collective effort. We urge other key players and partners in the sector to join hands with us in educating and empowering communities to embrace clean energy solutions. Let’s work together to build a sustainable future where clean energy empowers rural communities, protects our environment, and improves the lives of all.

” I used to walk a long distance to fetch firewood but now my life has been made easier. I just put on the biogas and cook for my family. It is very fast and does not produce any smoke. I now have time to engage in other household activities. The biogas has been not only to efficient cooking but also has improved my farm through the bio slurry.” -Beneficiary

Mangroves are carbon rich ecosystem that are mainly found in tropical areas around the world. However, they are threatened by a combination of natural and human induced factors. In the coastal town of Lamu, Kenya, mangrove degradation is particularly evident.
Mangroves are carbon rich ecosystem that are mainly found in tropical areas around the world. However, they are threatened by a combination of natural and human induced factors. In the coastal town of Lamu, Kenya, mangrove degradation is particularly evident. While these forests have traditionally sustained the local communities, overexploitation for timber and fuelwood has taken a heavy toll. The annual loss of approximately 60 hectares of mangrove forest is a pressing concern, and this rate continues to rise. When Mangroves are lost or degraded their core benefits to communities along with the ecosystems ability to sequester carbon. Restoration and protection of Mangroves is therefore recognized as a priority for both climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The 3E organization has identified Lamu, with its extensive mangrove cover, as a key area for intervention. By understanding the ecological and economic significance of mangroves to local communities, 3E aims to implement innovative solutions for their regeneration and protection. The organization recognizes the importance of community led initiatives that are inline with the government’s agenda.

Local communities in Faza, Pate, and Mpeketoni rely heavily on mangroves for their livelihoods. These forests serve as breeding grounds for various fish and seafood species, providing sustenance for fishermen. Additionally, the community utilizes mangrove wood for construction, fuel, and medicinal purposes. The communities have been putting commendable efforts in protecting the mangroves. They have been doing beach cleanups, clastic cleanup in the mangrove and mangrove reforestation.

A visit to Lamu County office of public health, environment, and climate change gave us an overview of the efforts they are putting in place to not only protect mangrove but the entire forest cover in Lamu. In joining the government efforts of planting 15 billion trees by 2030,the County is working to ensure they have planted 146 million trees by 2030 while still putting efforts in place to protect the Mangrove. While government efforts are underway to protect mangroves, more concerted action is needed. Community involvement is crucial, as evidenced by their efforts in mangrove planting and coastal clean-up initiatives. However, limited resources and capacity hinder their ability to scale up these efforts.

To ensure the long-term sustainability of Lamu’s mangrove ecosystems, 3E organization is committed to working with the coastal communities to regenerate and conserve marine ecosystem. By working together, we can safeguard these vital ecosystems and secure a sustainable future for the people of Lamu.
