Our planet has sustained humanity since the beginning, and our ancestors learned to care for it. However, increasing population exerts immense pressure daily. Deforestation for farming and settlement, along with river pollution from sewage and plastic, severely impacts our beautiful planet. We must ask: will our planet withstand this pressure?

This daily destruction threatens future generations if restoration efforts are not prioritized. Imagine our ancestors returning – would they even recognize this Earth? We must act decisively to prevent further devastation and challenge environmentally harmful practices. How much is needed to make a real impact?

While restoration often seems to require vast financial resources, advanced technology, and innovation, making it feel impossible with limited resources, significant change is achievable through localized action creating a ripple effect. Like a single drop creating expanding waves in a large body of water, our small collective efforts can transform our planet.

Through community-based projects, large and small, we strive to be part of the solution. Though our direct beneficiaries may be few compared to the wider population, our approach of fostering conservation champions within the community allows these stories to spread, inspiring others to improve. Our projects, centred on a greener future, have restored 69.25 acres of degraded land along the Molo River basin, revitalizing ecosystems and agricultural productivity. We have also planted over 11,000 tree seedlings for conservation and economic benefits and promoted renewable energy use.

We’ve learned that every action counts in environmental restoration. The impact is amplified when we collaborate with rural communities, who are significantly affected by climate change. Your action, my action, and our collective action are crucial for saving our planet and creating a greener future for all. Act now!

Recognizing the critical need for sustainable agricultural solutions, 3E Organization recently invested in comprehensive training for its staff on the principles and practices of syntropic agriculture at Forest foods in Limuru. The company grows organic produce using regenerative farming practices .Syntropic Agriculture uses regenerative approach, which mimics natural forest ecosystems, is seen as a vital component in achieving our organization’s goals for long-term agricultural sustainability.

The training program, that was conducted at forest foods, mainly looked into the core aspects of syntropic agriculture, including:

Biodiversity Integration: Understanding how to combine diverse plant species forest trees, fruit trees, vegetables, shrubs, herbs within a single production area.

Ecosystem Mimicry: Learning to replicate the structure and function of natural forests to enhance soil health and ecosystem resilience.

Biomass and Fertility Management: Mastering techniques for generating on-site biomass and fostering natural soil fertility.

Practical Implementation: Gaining hands-on experience in designing and implementing syntropic systems

The training was important for 3E because syntropic Agriculture aligns directly with the organizations commitment to promoting sustainable and resilient agricultural practices. The organization is focused on incorporating syntropic agriculture in its training activities and initiatives in order to enhance soil health, promote biodiversity for ecological resilience, improving food security due to increase in yields and finally mitigating climate change through its ability to sequester carbon and reduce greenhouse gases emissions.

Given the diverse range of sustainable and regenerative agriculture techniques, effective implementation requires practical knowledge and skills. Building upon the 3E Africa team’s recent theoretical and practical training at Forest Food, we will prioritize sharing this expertise with our beneficiaries. This knowledge transfer initiative will focus on improving farm yields and promoting the widespread adoption of sustainable farming practices.

The training on syntropic agriculture represents a significant step towards integrating regenerative practices into our organization’s work. By embracing this innovative approach, we can contribute to building a more sustainable and profitable agricultural that not only gives high yields but also protects our environment.

Every year, Kenya discards over 10,000 tons of coffee husks—the shells stripped from coffee beans during processing. For generations, coffee farming has been a cornerstone of Kenya’s economy, providing livelihoods for many. Yet behind the aroma of each freshly brewed cup lies a largely overlooked byproduct: coffee husks. Traditionally discarded or burned, these husks not only contribute to environmental pollution but also represent a missed opportunity for sustainable development. 3Es, through its Coffee Programme, seeks to change that narrative by exploring innovative ways to convert this waste stream into a valuable resource—benefiting the environment, the economy, and local communities.

Farmers often grapple with piles of husks that accumulate after coffee processing. Once dismissed as mere farm waste, these husks have caught the attention of 3E. Recognizing both the environmental burden and the economic potential, 3E has prioritized solutions that turn coffee husks into a driver of sustainable growth.

Harnessing the Power of Coffee Husks

Organic Fertilizer
Coffee husks are rich in organic matter and nutrients, making them ideal for compost. When used as organic fertilizer, these composted husks help enrich soil, boost crop yields, and reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers.

Renewable Energy
Instead of contributing to air pollution, coffee husks can be processed into biogas or briquettes—cleaner, more efficient alternatives to firewood or charcoal. This shift reduces deforestation, lowers household energy costs, and improves air quality in local communities.

Animal Feed and Silage
In some cases, coffee husks can also be incorporated into animal feed or silage, reducing waste and creating a more circular farming system.

3E’s Innovative Approaches

Coffee Husk Briquettes
Clean-burning briquettes offer an alternative to traditional firewood. By adopting briquettes, communities can help preserve forests, mitigate carbon emissions, and save on cooking fuel costs.

Biochar Production
Biochar, derived from coffee husks, is a highly stable soil amendment that locks carbon in the ground, boosts soil fertility, and improves water retention. This holistic approach not only enhances agricultural productivity but also contributes to climate change mitigation.

Embracing coffee husk utilization could spark local economic growth. Producing biochar or briquettes creates new job opportunities, particularly for women and youth. Additionally, by selling value-added coffee husk products, farmers and cooperatives can diversify their income streams. Over time, such ventures foster greater financial resilience and stability within farming communities.

While the potential is promising, fully harnessing coffee husks requires a combination of efforts:

Continued Research and Development: Ongoing innovation is crucial for optimizing processing techniques, discovering efficient transformation methods, and addressing any environmental concerns.

Community Training: Equipping local farmers, women, and youth with practical skills ensures they can effectively adopt and scale coffee husk utilization practices.

Raising Awareness: Communication and outreach help communities recognize the environmental and economic advantages of reusing coffee husks, thereby encouraging wider participation and support.

By reshaping how coffee husks are viewed and utilized, we are championing a new era of sustainable coffee production. Turning waste into resources not only helps preserve the environment but also empowers communities to thrive economically.

“Waste is only waste if we waste it.”

Join us in transforming linear industries into circular ecosystems. Support 3E, learn more about our ongoing efforts, and share our story.

Mangroves are carbon rich ecosystem that are mainly found in tropical areas around the world. However, they are threatened by a combination of natural and human induced factors. In the coastal town of Lamu, Kenya, mangrove degradation is particularly evident. While these forests have traditionally sustained the local communities, overexploitation for timber and fuelwood has taken a heavy toll. The annual loss of approximately 60 hectares of mangrove forest is a pressing concern, and this rate continues to rise. When Mangroves are lost or degraded their core benefits to communities along with the ecosystems ability to sequester carbon. Restoration and protection of Mangroves is therefore recognized as a priority for both climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The 3E organization has identified Lamu, with its extensive mangrove cover, as a key area for intervention. By understanding the ecological and economic significance of mangroves to local communities, 3E aims to implement innovative solutions for their regeneration and protection. The organization recognizes the importance of community led initiatives that are inline with the government’s agenda.

Local communities in Faza, Pate, and Mpeketoni rely heavily on mangroves for their livelihoods. These forests serve as breeding grounds for various fish and seafood species, providing sustenance for fishermen. Additionally, the community utilizes mangrove wood for construction, fuel, and medicinal purposes. The communities have been putting commendable efforts in protecting the mangroves. They have been doing beach cleanups, clastic cleanup in the mangrove and mangrove reforestation.

A visit to Lamu County office of public health, environment, and climate change gave us an overview of the efforts they are putting in place to not only protect mangrove but the entire forest cover in Lamu. In joining the government efforts of planting 15 billion trees by 2030,the County is working to ensure they have planted 146 million trees by 2030 while still putting efforts in place to protect the Mangrove. While government efforts are underway to protect mangroves, more concerted action is needed. Community involvement is crucial, as evidenced by their efforts in mangrove planting and coastal clean-up initiatives. However, limited resources and capacity hinder their ability to scale up these efforts.

To ensure the long-term sustainability of Lamu’s mangrove ecosystems, 3E organization is committed to working with the coastal communities to regenerate and conserve marine ecosystem. By working together, we can safeguard these vital ecosystems and secure a sustainable future for the people of Lamu.

Fodder trees offer a multitude of benefits for dairy farmers, including improved nutrition, increased milk production, cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability. The Milk Bora project demonstrates the positive impact that fodder trees can have on small-scale dairy farming operations. By promoting the adoption of fodder trees, 3E organization contributes to both agricultural productivity and environmental conservation.

3E organization through its project Milk Bora, trained farmers on how best they can diversify fodder and incorporate fodder trees in their farms. The farmers were later supplied with fodder trees that they planted in the farm. Those farmers who incorporated fodder trees into their feeding regimes reported a significant increase in milk yield. This was due to the nutrient-rich nature of fodder trees, which provided cows with essential vitamins, minerals, and protein. Moreover, fodder trees are relatively drought-resistant, ensuring a consistent supply of feed even during dry seasons.

Beyond their nutritional benefits, fodder trees also offer several environmental advantages. They help to prevent soil erosion, improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation, and act as windbreaks, protecting crops from damage. Additionally, fodder trees can be used as live fences, providing a natural boundary for farms and reducing the need for costly fencing materials.

Fodder trees are a valuable asset for dairy farmers, majority of the farmers are now getting to understand the importance of having fodder trees in the farms and incorporating them in the dairy cow’s diet for the nutritional benefits. These trees are rich in protein and significantly increase milk production. The trainings on fodder trees have brought on board more and more farmers who want to reap the multiple benefits of these trees.

By promoting the cultivation and use of fodder trees, 3Eorganization helps in improving the livelihoods of small-scale dairy farmers while also contributing to a more sustainable agricultural landscape.

As environmental conservation takes center stage, 3E Africa is pioneering innovative solutions that prioritize both the environment and economic prosperity. Their holistic approach in Subukia, perfectly demonstrates this, creating a win-win situation for farmers and the land they cultivate.

3E Africa started by equipping farmers with high-yielding grafted Ruiru coffee seedlings, that provide both ecological and economic benefits to the farmers. Recognizing the need for additional benefits and environmental protection, 3E Africa introduced intercropping with grafted macadamia seedlings. These macadamia trees offer benefits both economically and environmentally.

Macadamia trees act as windbreakers, shielding coffee plants from harsh winds and minimizing water loss. This is crucial in the face of increasing droughts and extreme weather conditions. Additionally, their expansive canopy creates a perfect condition for optimal coffee growth. Macadamia trees are relatively easy to manage. As a perennial crop, they provide long-term economic benefits for farmers through sustained nut production, improving their livelihoods. The advantages extend beyond the economic benefits. The macadamia’s deep root system helps improve soil health and nutrient cycling, benefiting both crops in the long run.

The intercropping system, actively promoted by 3E Africa, fosters a more sustainable agricultural ecosystem in several ways. The diverse canopy structure creates a home for beneficial insects, including pollinators like bees, which are essential for both coffee and macadamia production. This reduces reliance on harmful chemical pesticides, promoting a healthier environment. In the long-run, a thriving ecosystem is created, benefiting both the crops and the surrounding environment.

By harnessing the natural synergy between macadamia and coffee, 3E Africa’s approach creates a ripple effect of positive outcomes. Farmers benefit from increased yields and income diversification, while the environment enjoys improved soil health, reduced reliance on pesticides, and a boost in biodiversity.

The 3E organization understands that a sustainable future requires a balanced approach. By empowering farmers with the knowledge and resources for intercropping, they are not only helping them achieve financial security but also contributing to a healthier planet.3E’s approaches pave way for a more secure and sustainable future, ensuring our coffee and macadamia nuts are produced in harmony with nature.

Climate change has put environmental conservation into the spotlight. Human activities and pollution have degraded our lands, harming the environment. Restoring these lands requires a collective effort to ensure a better future for generations to come.

Collective restoration efforts offers massive benefits for both people and nature. Reforestation, wetland and farmland restoration, along with other natural solutions, can provide over a third of the greenhouse gas mitigation needed by 2030. Healthy lands contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, improved economies, food security, clean water, good health, and biodiversity protection. This is why land restoration isn’t just an option but a necessity.

Land restoration is a collective responsibility. Everyone, from international organizations and governments to businesses, investors, communities, and individuals, has a role to play. In Kenya, where agriculture is the backbone of the economy, has significantly degraded the land. The growing population intensifies this issue. The use of chemicals to increase farm productivity contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution. Additionally, population growth puts pressure on forests, with some resorting to cutting down trees for charcoal and encroaching on forest land for settlements.

The future of Kenya depends on healthy land. 3E organization joins other key players in the restoration journey in Nakuru and Baringo Counties through its projects. 3E focuses on restoring farmlands and forests in Kenya, placing environmental protection and conservation at the heart of its mission. It promotes reforestation using native and other tree species to reduce domestic wood consumption. Alongside these efforts, 3E champions for sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices and methods that increase productivity while minimizing environmental impact, contributing to a world with access to sufficient, nutritious, and environmentally friendly food.

3E collaborates with communities, sharing knowledge on the importance of land protection and provide resources to empower them implement approaches that benefit both humanity and the environment. We are committed to being active participants in the land restoration journey, but we can’t do it alone. This is a call to action for everyone. By working together, we can heal the planet.

The recent downpour, initially a welcome sight for parched farmland, has transformed into a nightmare for over 27 Kenyan counties. The longed-for rain has become relentless, causing devastating floods that bring a multitude of hardships. Homes are submerged, forcing people to evacuate. Roads become impassable, severing vital connections. Worst of all, floods claim lives. These raging waters are not just destructive; they are deadly.

While the floods are upon us, immediate action is crucial. Evacuate to safe areas as soon as possible, turn off electricity to prevent electrical hazards, and seek help by contacting emergency services and informing them of your situation. These efforts can lighten the adverse effects we are seeing.

We can’t control the weather, but we can mitigate the impact of floods. Human activities have significantly contributed to this disaster. Sand mining and deforestation weaken the natural barriers that hold back water, leading to increased flooding. Specifically, deforestation activities like cutting down trees for firewood or timber can worsen the situation. Additionally, poor waste disposal, especially prevalent in urban areas, leads to clogged drains that impede water flow and worsen flooding.

Baringo, a low-lying area, exemplifies the dangers of deforestation. The rampant destruction of trees for charcoal has led to heavy siltation in Lake Baringo. This, in turn, has caused the lake to overflow, devastating communities as far as 2.6 kilometres away. The 2019 floods serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of environmental neglect.

The solution lies in environmental responsibility. By planting trees, we can create extensive tree cover that prevents soil erosion and slows water runoff, reducing flood risk. Proper waste disposal is also crucial to avoid clogged drainage systems. Environmental conservation overall is vital for our well-being and future generations.

At 3E, we are committed to a greener tomorrow. We train our beneficiaries in sustainable farming practices that are environmentally friendly and economically beneficial. We also promote the use of renewable energy sources like solar and biogas, further safeguarding our environment.

The heavy rains may have brought initial hope, but they have served as a wake-up call. By adopting sustainable practices and protecting our environment, we can work towards a future where floods are not a cause for devastation, but a sign of a healthy ecosystem.

In Kenya, a vital initiative is reshaping the way milk is handled and transported, directly affecting the quality that reaches consumers. 3Es, in close collaboration with the Regulatory Authority, the Kenya Dairy Board, and the Ministry of Agriculture, is at the forefront of this transformative movement.

The journey to quality milk starts with healthy cows, but it’s the handling process where many challenges arise. To address this, the Kenya Dairy Board has set out comprehensive guidelines for safe milk handling and stipulated legal requirements for transport and marketing. This proactive approach is crucial in maintaining milk quality from the farm to the consumer’s table.

One of the significant milestones in this journey is the shift away from plastic containers, which have been linked to contamination risks. Dairy transporters were given a firm deadline to adopt recommended, safer containers, highlighting the commitment to milk safety at every step.

3E has been instrumental in implementing these changes in the Molo area. They’ve conducted training sessions for farmers and transporters, focusing on the importance of using proper containers. The training was followed by the distribution of essential equipment, including transportation, storage, and milking cans, to support farmers and transporters in adhering to these new standards. This support notably included Mau Juhudi Dairy, a significant participant in the “Milk Bora” project, underlining the effort to enhance milk quality throughout the production and supply chain.

The distribution event itself was a critical gathering of the dairy sector’s major players. It included the Dairy Board of Kenya and local agricultural authorities. At this event, 200 pieces of 9-litre cans, 15 milking buckets, and 65 larger cans were distributed. This substantial step forward promises to enhance the dairy chain’s efficiency and safety significantly.

The Director of the Kenya Dairy Board, Mrs. Beth Wangari Mbuthia, played a pivotal role in this event. During her speech, she stressed the importance of using recommended containers. She encouraged farmers to adopt these changes, emphasizing that they go beyond mere compliance – they are about upholding the quality and safety of the milk supply. The farmers’ reaction to the distribution of new milk containers was overwhelmingly positive. They recognized the vital role these containers play in improving product quality and safety. Their commitment to supplying Mau Juhudi Dairy is a testament to their willingness to adapt and improve, ensuring a brighter future for the dairy sector in Kenya.

This initiative’s impact goes far beyond the distribution of equipment. It’s a holistic approach to dairy farming that encompasses training, legal compliance, and market connections. This comprehensive strategy aims to uplift the entire dairy industry in Kenya.

This transformational journey in milk handling and transportation heralds a new era for Kenya’s dairy sector. It’s a story of improvement, cooperation, and hope – a vision of a thriving industry that guarantees quality from the cow to the consumer.

Through the combined efforts of various stakeholders and a strong focus on quality and safety, this initiative is poised to secure a brighter future for Kenyan dairy farmers and consumers alike. It exemplifies the power of collaboration and innovation in agriculture.

This project has been made possible through funding from the Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia and is implemented by 3E in collaboration with Mani Tese ETS and Necofa.
