At 3E Africa, our mission is ambitious yet vital, to foster sustainable development across the continent through integrated initiatives in environment, entrepreneurship and energy. We believe that true progress requires a holistic approach, leveraging local strengths and engaging every member of the community. While the critical role of women in development is widely recognized and championed, we’re keenly focused on having a good balance of men in our initiatives.

Our on-the-ground experience in Baringo, where many initiatives traditionally focus only on women, has revealed a critical insight, gender-inclusive approaches significantly enhance project success and sustainability. We have observed that women’s groups often benefit from the strategic involvement of a smaller percentage of men. These male participants offer vital support by filling crucial roles that align with traditional skill sets, such as honey harvesting and providing essential guidance in group leadership.

Crucially, our efforts to implement initiatives by involving both men and women at the household level have demonstrated good outcomes. We have consistently found that initiatives supported by both male and female members within the same household experience greater success and deeper sustainability. This reinforces the need to move beyond single gender targeting toward a model of shared responsibility and collective household empowerment.

The active involvement of men is not just beneficial, it’s absolutely crucial for the success and sustainability of our projects. Their participation amplifies our impact, ensures broad community buy-in, and creates a robust foundation for lasting change.

At 3E Africa, we recognize that sustainable development is a team sport. It requires the active, equitable, and meaningful participation of everyone, women, youth, and crucially, men. By intentionally involving men in our environment, entrepreneurship and energy initiatives, we are not just adding numbers, we are unlocking potential, fostering ownership, and building stronger, more resilient communities.

When men stand shoulder-to-shoulder with women and youth, advocating for conservation, embracing clean energy, and pioneering new enterprises, the entire community thrives. Their involvement is not just a complement to our work; it is a fundamental pillar upon which 3E Africa’s vision for a sustainable and prosperous communities is built.

Dairy farming has been a pillar of economic activity in our Molo since colonial times, a tradition passed down through generations. However, over time, a single, persistent challenge, feeding the cows has drawn many farmers away from this valuable activity. The great difficulty of finding adequate feed has caused a significant shift, pushing the majority of farmers towards chemical-intensive crop farming. As a result, dairy farming risked becoming just a side activity, done only to get milk for the household rather than for the substantial profits it once brought to families.

During our assessment, we realized why dairy farming had become such a stressful venture despite its profitability. The core issue wasn’t a lack of effort, but a lack of knowledge about how to diversify and preserve feed for use during the challenging dry periods. The typical cow diet was highly inefficient, consisting mostly of Napier grass throughout the year, supplemented only by low-nutrient additions like weeds and farm waste left after harvest. This poor diet directly led to low milk production and declining cow health, confirming the need for a focused fix.

As the 3E organization, our goal for the Dairy Project was simple, to reduce the feeding burden on farmers and, crucially, to increase milk production by solving the basic problem of poor nutrition. Our help started with a series of trainings, beginning with teaching farmers about the different types of feed and their specific nutritional value to dairy cows. This was immediately followed by hands-on training on their own farms to establish diverse feed plots. There, they planted high-energy feeds like Super Napier, oat grass, and sorghum, alongside protein-rich options such as Lucerne, sweet potato vines, and desmodium.

The practical learning continued through the harvest period, where farmers were trained on key methods, including proper wilting to manage water content and achieving the correct daily mix of protein and energy feed. Most importantly, we focused on teaching feed conservation. We implemented silage making which allows farmers to save their extra harvest. This simple yet effective method gives them a consistent, high-quality feed supply all year, acting as a vital supplement when food is scarce in the dry season.

Following these comprehensive trainings, farmers have reported seeing clear and positive changes in their cow’s health and milk production. They are already actively benefiting from the diversified and stored feed supply, reducing their daily stress and improving their output. Our hope is that as they continue to use and improve the knowledge and practices learned, dairy farming will steadily and sustainably transition back to being the high-income economic activity it was always meant to be for their households. A well-fed cow is truly a growing business.

For generations, farmers have relied on their land and expertise to produce for home consumption and sale the surplus, but a lack of formal financial knowledge has often limited their ability to fully capitalize on their hard work. Financial Literacy training is set to change that narrative, equipping Coffee farmers with essential skills to manage, grow, and secure their farm finances, making farming a high-income activity for the households.

Having seen these gaps with the farmers, 3E organization partnered with Caritas Nakuru, to conduct a financial literacy training to coffee farmers in Kabazi and Subukia. The training was done to members of two Cooperatives that the organization has been supporting, Ndemu and Kiremba coffee farmers cooperative society. The training perfectly aligns with one of the key pillars of the organization, entrepreneurship. Mainly focusing on transforming how farmers view and manage their earnings.

The key focus of the training was to enhance better farm finances management among the farmers. Different farming activities like any other businesses, has fluctuating income and expenses. The training provided practical tools for budgeting, record-keeping, and assessing profitability. Farmers being able to track costs more accurately, identify unnecessary expenses, and make informed decisions on purchasing inputs, ultimately boosting their farm’s financial muscle.

The training also emphasized on Saving Culture. One of the greatest challenges for smallholder farmers is managing income received in seasonal or irregular payments. The training stressed the necessity of a saving culture, helping farmers set aside funds not just for emergencies, but for future investments, ensuring financial resilience between harvest seasons. Additionally, beyond daily operations, the training unlocked the concept of strategic investment. This knowledge empowers farmers to look for opportunities to diversify their income streams, invest in higher-yielding inputs, or upgrade their farming technology all aimed at increasing long-term productivity and improved livelihood.

The sessions, delivered with a practical and relatable approach that helped the farmers to understand better. The session was culminated with a session on Village Savings and Loaning Association (VSLA) which was meant to practically influence the saving culture and keep the farmer on track. The farmers were highly appreciated the training, genuinely believing that it will better their farm finances management and savings. Many realised they had been operating “blindly” when it came to tracking profitability and planning for the future.

By instilling the discipline of financial planning, we are not just helping farmers manage money, we are cultivating a path toward sustained financial independence and generational prosperity in their households and communities at large.

Over the past two weeks, our team has spent time with farmers on their land. This close interaction and the subsequent data collection have revealed the significant challenges they currently face. The farmers mainly depend on farming to provide for their families, a crucial question arises, in the era of climate change can agriculture remain a sustainable livelihood for them?

One seasoned farmer reminisced about their childhood, recalling a time when farms flourished with healthy crops year-round, consistently yielding abundant harvests. However, as the years have passed, these farmers have witnessed a gradual decline in their yields. Now, the margin between profitability and loss after harvest has become alarmingly thin. In fact, many farmers admit their reluctance to keep farm records, fearing the disheartening reality of potential losses, especially when they perceive no alternative. This begs the question, is crop farming truly their only option?

The many challenges that farmers have starting from degraded soils, low productivity, high cost of farm inputs, changing weather patterns, lack of resources and lack of certified seeds. We can all understand that all these challenges can be frustrating. Putting in your resources and effort ,then getting so little at the end of the day can be demoralizing and even more frustrating when farmers realize this has been their primary source of livelihood.

Beyond crop cultivation, the farmers have also voiced concerns regarding dairy production, specifically citing challenges related to feeding costs and low milk output. Consequently, many do not view dairy farming as a viable alternative, fearing further disappointment. However, 3E Organization believes there is significant potential in the dairy sector. Through a series of training sessions and careful cost-of-production analyses, we’ve identified an opportunity to transform the lives of these farmers for the better. The fear surrounding dairy production often stems from a lack of knowledge regarding effective strategies to convert it into a high-income generating activity.

At 3E, our vision is a future where agriculture empowers rural communities. Our focused efforts in dairy production have already yielded positive results, demonstrated by a 39.41% increase in milk production among participating farmers. We are confident that through comprehensive training in fodder establishment, fodder conservation, dairy production and management, coupled with consistent farm visits and expert advice, we can achieve a future where dairy production isn’t just for prestige but rather a high-income activity for households that can transform livelihoods for rural communities.

Despite its high potential for dairy farming, Molo, like many highland areas in Kenya, has been hindered by a lack of technical knowledge among farmers. This has often resulted in low milk production, limiting the income potential for many households. To address this challenge, the 3E organization has been working to equip farmers with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively manage their dairy cows. By providing training and technical assistance, the organization aims to improve milk production and quality, ultimately enhancing the livelihoods

The 3E organization, through the Milk Bora project, brought international expertise in the area to transform the dairy production. Bartolome Owono Owono, a Ph.D. holder in Agricultural Sciences and Biotechnology and a research collaborator at the University of Udine recently visited Molo to share his knowledge with local farmers. His extensive knowledge in animal production can transform the dairy sector in Molo and Kenya at large.

His trip to Kenya, specifically to Molo, was a technical-scientific support mission to local farmers with the aim of increasing milk production by 20% and reaching 50% of farmers who adopt good animal production practices. By visiting farmers and interacting directly with farmers, he was able to assess their current practices and provide tailored advice mainly on Optimizing feed quality and quantity to enhance milk production, ensuring cows receive adequate water, Maintaining clean and sanitary conditions in cow sheds and ensuring proper and efficient daily routines for optimal milk production.

This valuable knowledge transfer has the potential to significantly impact the livelihoods of Molo farmers. By increasing milk production and quality, farmers can generate higher incomes, improve their families’ well-being, and contribute to the economic growth of the region.

3E organization remains dedicated to empowering rural communities through sustainable and innovative solutions in the dairy sector. By fostering partnerships with external experts, the organization aims to transform the dairy industry in Molo and beyond.

“My presence in Molo, the visits to the farms and the recommendations given to each of these farmers was important, not only to guide them towards increasing bovine milk production by first studying the possible factors that limit it, but also for the adoption of sustainable practices at the environmental, economic and social level, considering the importance of rural development, where the well-being and standard of living of farmers plays an important role. Having seen the numerous deficiencies in the current production model in Molo, we can begin to provide practical support based on what actually exists. respecting the traditional and cultural values that characterize the area, and possibly proposing improvements within the framework of the existing relationship between MANI TESE and his local partner 3E, and the department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Udine.”

Bartolome Owono Owono,

For generations, coffee farmers in Kabazi have relied on traditional knowledge to cultivate their crops. While these practices have sustained livelihoods, they often fall short in maximizing profits and ensuring financial stability. To address this, 3E Organization has prioritized entrepreneurial development, focusing on financial literacy to empower farmers.

Recognizing the need for financial knowledge, 3E Organization, in partnership with Equity Group Foundation, has been conducting training sessions for over 300 coffee farmers from Kiremba and Ndemu Coffee farmers cooperative societies. These trainings aim to equip farmers with the essential skills to assess profitability, create budgets, and explore investment opportunities.

The team from equity group foundation had a well-tailored training for coffee farmers. The training mainly emphasized on the importance of saving even small amount and investing it in agripreneurship activities. The farmers also learned on budgeting and how to create personalized budgets based on their income and explore other investment ideas to diversify their income streams ensuring they meet their financial needs comfortably. Additionally, . Trainers highlighted the advantages of having a bank account for farm income deposits, which could facilitate access to loans for future farm improvements and income expansion.

The farmers were appreciative of the training stating that the training was an eye opener that have made them realize that they have been doing their farming activities blindly without necessarily looking into profitability. The positive feedback from farmers clearly indicated the importance of these training sessions. By gaining insights into financial planning and investment strategies, farmers are empowered to make informed decisions and optimize their earnings.

3E Organization remains committed to sustainable rural development and will continue to provide support and resources to empower farmers and improve their livelihoods.

In the highland counties of Kenya, dairy farming has long been a cornerstone of the local economy. Many farmers practice small-scale operations, each tending to a few cows that produce an average of 5 litres of milk per milking session. While traditional milk products have been passed down through generations, their short shelf life and nutrient loss often limit their economic potential.

To address these challenges, 3E organization , through the Milk Bora Project got a cheese expert to train Mau Juhudi on milk value addition. Through a series of training sessions, they acquired the skills to produce a variety of value-added dairy products, including mozzarella, ricotta, primo sale, nostrano and robiola, as well as yoghurt. These products not only offer a longer shelf life but also cater to a wider range of consumer preferences.

The group’s dedication and hard work have paid off. Their mozzarella cheese has become a popular choice among consumers, and their yoghurt has found a steady market. As demand for their products has grown, they have continued to invest in training and innovation. This year, they learned to make even more advanced cheeses like gouda, cheddar and Molo cheese, further expanding their product line.

The Kenyan cheese market, while still relatively small, presents significant opportunities for small businesses like Mau Juhudi. By offering high-quality, locally produced products, they can tap into a growing consumer base. The group’s commitment to value addition is a strategic move that can enhance their profitability and contribute to the overall development of the dairy industry.

Beyond economic benefits, the Milk Bora project has also had a positive impact on the local community. By providing farmers with new skills and market opportunities, it has helped to improve livelihoods and reduce poverty. As Mau Juhudi continues to grow and succeed, it serves as a model for other dairy farmers in the region, demonstrating the potential of value addition to transform the industry.

Entrepreneurship has emerged as a powerful force for economic development, creating jobs and fostering innovation. By providing entrepreneurs with the necessary support, we can unleash the full potential of this sector and create even more opportunities for growth.

3E organization is committed to transforming traditional farming practices into profitable agripreneurship practice. We recognize that farmers have the potential to generate substantial income, but often lack the knowledge and resources to do so effectively is a great challenge. Training them on the best farming practices that not only ensure they increase the yield but also protect our environment.

Our approach to entrepreneurship prioritizes environmental sustainability and economic viability. We believe that conservation can be profitable to rural communities. We encourage farmers to adopt greener practices. By supporting farmers in developing sustainable agripreneurship ventures, we are creating a win-win situation for both farmers and the environment.

To ensure the success of our agripreneurship initiatives, we provide comprehensive support to enterprises. The support includes material support, financial support and technical support. The organization through MILK BORA project has supported Mau Juhudi dairy to operationalize and also given them a training on value addition of milk. In Baringo the organization through its project CHAKULA CHETU AFYA YETU supported a women group in Marigat subcounty to establish a brooding Centre for Improved kienyeji chicken. Both enterprises are doing well and profiting the groups and the communities at large. By enabling enterprises to thrive, we create a robust ecosystem that benefits both farmers and consumers.

We understand that knowledge is power. To equip farmers with the skills they need to succeed, we offer financial literacy and agripreneurship training in partnership with Equity Group Foundation. By providing farmers with insights into profit management and investment strategies, we empower them to make informed decisions and maximize their returns.

3E organization is dedicated to supporting enterprises and farmers in their entrepreneurial endeavours. Through our programs, we are creating a sustainable economic future for rural communities while promoting environmental conservation. By fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, we are unlocking the full potential of agripreneurship and driving positive change.

Financial literacy is essential for dairy farmers to make profit. Without it, tracking earnings, identifying investment opportunities, and transforming farming from a hobby to a high-income activity becomes challenging. At 3E, where we prioritize entrepreneurial development for our farmers, we recognized this very challenge.

Since we started working with the dairy farmers last year, we observed that a majority of our dairy farmers lacked the knowledge to assess their profitability. Many juggled multiple farming activities without identifying areas for optimal investment. To bridge this gap, we sought expertise from Equity Group Foundation to equip our farmers with the necessary financial knowledge.

Throughout the month, we conducted the first sessions of the training in various locations, reaching over 200 dairy farmers. The focus was on budgeting and saving. The farmers learned how to create personalized budgets based on their income and explore ways to diversify their income streams, ensuring they meet their financial needs comfortably.

The training also emphasized the importance of saving, even small amounts. Trainers highlighted the advantages of having a bank account for farm income deposits, which could facilitate access to loans for future farm improvements and income expansion.

The interactive sessions sparked curiosity among the farmers. Many expressed that the training was a revelation, dispelling the myth that saving requires a large sum. They appreciated the simplified approach and are eagerly awaiting the next session.

The team from Equity Group Foundation delivered the training with expertise and enthusiasm, making complex financial concepts easy to understand. We look forward to the second session and witnessing our farmers gain confidence in managing their finances and making informed financial decisions. Our commitment remains steadfast: to equip our farmers with entrepreneurial skills and empower them to maximize their income from their farming endeavors.

Sarah Ruto, a 48-year-old resident of Kaptich village in Marigat subcounty, Kenya, was familiar with the challenges of farming in an arid and semi-arid area (ASAL). For years, she relied on maize farming primarily for commercial purposes, generating income only once a year, which mainly went towards her children’s school fees. However, in 2023, her life took a turn for the better when she became a beneficiary of the “Chakula Chetu, afya yetu” project, led by the 3E organization.

The “Chakula Chetu, afya yetu” project, aimed to empower women in Marigat subcounty through innovative and sustainable agricultural practices. In collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, the project offered technical support and training on crops that are well adapted to the area. Sarah volunteered a piece of her land to be used as a demonstration plot.

The demonstration plot became a model for the project. With the guidance of skilled Ministry of Agriculture officers, Sarah and other women group members learned valuable techniques for setting up efficient kitchen gardens. These techniques included creating cone gardens, moist gardens, and multi-storey gardens, maximizing space and productivity. The plot flourished with a diverse range of African leafy vegetables like African nightshade, amaranth, spider plant, and cowpeas. Additionally, vegetables commonly consumed in the area, such as kale, spinach, and spring onions, were incorporated alongside a fruit orchard consisting of pawpaw, mango, and banana trees.

The use of manure as a natural fertilizer enriched the soil and boosted overall yield. Moreover, planting 15 fodder trees served a dual purpose: providing cover and a sustainable food source for the dairy goats, another element of the project. The success of the demonstration plot was undeniable. The kitchen gardens thrived due to their minimal water requirements and ease of management. Encouraged by the initial harvest, Sarah and the group replanted the vegetables, ensuring a continuous supply. The surplus produce provided a new source of income. Sarah found herself a regular vendor at the Marigat market, selling vegetables twice a week.

What started as a willingness to participate in a project blossomed into a life-changing experience for Sarah. Her weekly income from selling vegetables reached a remarkable 2,500 shillings, while pawpaw harvests, brought in an additional 3,000 shillings weekly. Witnessing the project’s transformative power, Sarah made a resolute decision to expand the demonstration plot, allowing her to cultivate even more pawpaw trees and a wider variety of vegetables.

Sarah’s dedication didn’t stop there. During a visit to the demonstration plot, she proudly displayed a newly established pawpaw seedling, a testament to her commitment to growth and expansion. Sarah Ruto’s story is a beacon of hope, proving that arid and semi-arid areas can be fertile ground for sustainable agriculture. By adopting water-saving techniques and utilizing environment-friendly solutions, communities can cultivate a path towards nutritious food and financial empowerment.

The “Chakula Chetu, afya yetu” project serves as a model for future initiatives, demonstrating the transformative power of knowledge, collaboration, and a commitment to a greener future.
